Description

This course provides an introductory overview of the rapidly expanding field of Biorobotics, highlighting its multidisciplinary nature and its key role in advancing healthcare and human well-being. It is designed to present the foundational concepts and main research areas developed within the field, with particular attention to the contributions of leading experts from the BioRobotics Institute of Sant’Anna. Participants will explore how robotics, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, medicine, and engineering converge to design innovative solutions for clinical and assistive applications.

The course covers a broad spectrum of topics, including wearable and collaborative technologies, artificial organs and prosthetic systems, medical robotics and regenerative medicine, as well as mathematical and computational modelling approaches. Additional focus is given to bioinspired and soft robotics, alongside neuroscience-driven robotics and bioelectronics, providing a comprehensive view of both current technologies and emerging research directions. Through these modules, students gain insight into the fundamental principles underlying biorobotic systems and their real-world applications.

LEONARDO CAPPELLO

Assistant Professor at the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, where he leads the Textile Robotics Lab. Awarded an ERC Starting Grant for the MUSE project, his research focuses on soft wearable robotics for human sensorimotor restoration and augmentation.

Associate Professor at the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. His research covers soft actuators, smart compliant sensors, flexible mechanisms, and full soft robotic systems.

BIANCA CIONI

Post-Doc Fellow within the “Regenerative Technologies” Lab of the BioRobotics Institute. She has a strong background in Oncology research, which stays a great interest of her. She is now focused on the therapeutic effects of biophysical stimuli, including Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field in chronic wound healing.

Gastone Ciuti

Full Professor of Bioengineering and Director of The BioRobotics Institute at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa. As Head of the Healthcare Mechatronics Laboratory, his research focuses on the study, design, implementation, and clinical validation of integrated platforms and intelligent systems for medical applications, aiming to promote effective, reliable, and minimally invasive diagnosis, therapy, and intervention, particularly within the gastrointestinal tract.

LINDA PATERNO'

Assistant Professor (RTDa) in the Surgical Robotics and Allied Technologies Area of the BioRobotics Institute, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. Her research focuses on the development of medical robotic devices characterized by high compliance, shape-changing capabilities, and variable stiffness. These features enable the design of innovative robotic systems that can safely and effectively interact with the human body.

Gojko Perovic

He is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. His research focuses on control for Human-Robot Collaboration, robotic manipulation, and robot learning from different modalities of human teaching.

Giulia Raffaele

Giulia Raffaele is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, at the "Surface Phenomena and Integrated Systems Lab" led by Professor Fabian Meder. She conducts research at the interface of plant physiology and biohybrid systems. Her work focuses on understanding biological mechanisms and translating them into innovative engineering solutions for sustainable technologies.

She received her PhD in Artificial Intelligence for Agrifood and Environment, during which she investigated pre-symbiotic interactions between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, combining plant physiology, molecular biology, advanced imaging, and artificial intelligence to study plant communication and adaptive behaviour.

JULIANA REDONDO

Post-Doc Fellow within the “Regenerative Technologies” Lab of the BioRobotics Institute. She is currently working on an INAIL-financed project, MioPRO2, combining stem cell-based strategies and bioengineering for muscle regeneration. Besides her research activities, she is involve in teaching and supervision of students.
