Nicola Fabbian

Nicola Fabbian is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Geotechnical Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering of the University of Padova, Italy. He obtained his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering with research focused on developing innovative methodologies for the risk assessment of river embankments in mountainous environments. His scientific activities address the safety of flood protection infrastructures, seepage and internal erosion processes in soils, geotechnical monitoring, and the application of advanced technologies based on distributed fiber optic sensing, geophysical investigations, and photogrammetric techniques. He collaborates with public authorities and infrastructure managers on monitoring systems and risk management strategies for hydraulic and geotechnical assets. He is the author of several international scientific publications and teaches courses in soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and geotechnical monitoring, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge in both academic and professional contexts.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The students will gain an introductory understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of soils and the main mechanisms governing their behavior. They will be able to interpret results from basic geotechnical tests, applying the fundamental concepts required for a preliminary assessment of structural stability and the identification of critical conditions related to geotechnical risk.

Prerequisites

To attend the course, a basic knowledge of mathematics and physics is required, as acquired during the first two years of an engineering program (particularly in courses on continuum mechanics and fluid mechanics), or an equivalent technical background.
