The course provides an overview of the main aspects related to landslides: classifications, geomorphological characteristics, criteria for the analysis and selection of geotechnical parameters, and tools for understanding inventories and thematic maps. Traditional and advanced monitoring techniques, early warning systems, and the main mitigation solutions are also covered.

Module Release Timeline:

Lorenzo Brezzi

Lorenzo Brezzi is a researcher and educator specializing in Geotechnical Engineering, with a focus on landslide risk management and innovative infrastructure monitoring. My work bridges the gap between theoretical modeling and practical application, particularly in the study of how unstable slopes interact with critical linear infrastructures like bridges and roads

User picture

Nicola Fabbian

Nicola Fabbian is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Geotechnical Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering of the University of Padova, Italy. He obtained his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering with research focused on developing innovative methodologies for the risk assessment of river embankments in mountainous environments. His scientific activities address the safety of flood protection infrastructures, seepage and internal erosion processes in soils, geotechnical monitoring, and the application of advanced technologies based on distributed fiber optic sensing, geophysical investigations, and photogrammetric techniques. He collaborates with public authorities and infrastructure managers on monitoring systems and risk management strategies for hydraulic and geotechnical assets. He is the author of several international scientific publications and teaches courses in soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and geotechnical monitoring, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge in both academic and professional contexts.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Students will acquire knowledge on landslide types, geomorphological characteristics, predisposing and triggering factors, inventories and thematic mapping, as well as an overview of the main monitoring methods, early warning, and possible mitigation measures. Students will develop the competence to interpret field observations and cartographic information to identify potential situations of instability and understand when it is necessary to involve geotechnical experts. They will also be able to recognize risk signs on slopes and in project contexts, consult maps and inventories for a preliminary assessment, and clearly communicate the presence of possible problems to qualified professionals.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of geotechnics is required, acquired for example through an introductory course or the “Soil Mechanics” MOOC. No specific academic qualifications are required; however, it is useful to be familiar with the fundamental concepts related to soil behavior.

Destinatari

The course is aimed at students and professionals without prior knowledge of landslide phenomena, who wish to acquire the basic knowledge to be able to recognize potential situations of instability, interpret maps and inventories, and knowledgeably involve specialized technical personnel in the preliminary phases of design or risk assessment.
