The course aims to provide basic knowledge of the main methods for classifying rock masses for engineering purposes.

The course begins with a discussion of the main characteristics of the discontinuities naturally present in rock masses, which greatly influence the behavior of the whole. After discussing the main classification methods developed over time, some elements on the estimation of shear strength and the stability assessment of rock elements with simple geometry are also presented.

The course modules will be released progressively according to the schedule below:

  • 4th June: Module 1
  • 29th June: Module 2
  • TBD Module 3

The course is intended for students and professionals without specific knowledge of rock mechanics who wish to acquire the basic knowledge of rock mass characterization necessary to understand specialized literature on the topic or to interact with industry professionals.

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of the different possible rock formations is recommended, as this topic will not be covered in this course. Some basic knowledge of structural engineering is also required (such as stress, strain, shear strength, failure criterion and in particular Mohr-Coulomb criterion).
